Weekly TV Reviews: Charmed s3 ep5

Cold open find a couple ending on very bad terms when a spell sends the woman running over her boyfriend. The episode theme of the week focuses on the crazed car lady which finds couples turning on each other and given today's social media craze, these are recruited online. The sisters see about it on social media, tackle their everyday life with magical problems, and Jordan teaming up with Harry on the latest mission for answers about deciphering the ancient language. The conclusion of the episode brings them to the discovery (thanks to Harry) that they're looking for a myth and is a creature that gets power from false devotion.

Thoughts:

1.) Macy

She inherits Safe Space and now she's tasked with running a business on top of finding a cure for their current magic allergy. She has so much on her plate that she didn't expect to be handed an entire company and this community that she's in charge of. This inheritance is pushing her to think about what she wants in life and is giving her an opportunity to make the most of a company that values community and people. It's also nice to see other layers to her story that show her in every facet while continuing to work out her relationship with Harry.

2.) Mel

She gets in trouble with the Dean who isn't happy that she added the book to the class syllabus, only to get pushed towards a book written by the Dean herself. This conflict is seen through Mel's struggle with whether to give in or to stick by her convictions which doesn't help when Kevin thanks her. This season seems to be focusing more on the characters finding their voices and their place within the community with each character learning how to speak up, stand up, and stand strong.

3.) Maggie

She's using dance to focus her anxiety and stress while she continues her feuding with Antonio who still reigns as her nemesis. She's searching for her place and worries she won't find which is another aspect of the character that's easy to relate to. Maggie is such a grounded character and instantly who we connected with upon first watching as she's so flawed in the best way. Her struggle with anxiety will empower all those that struggle and it's so refreshing to see a heroic character struggle in this way. Maggie discovers another layer to her abilities when the catatonic Julie mimics her movements.

4.) Harry & Jordan

Jordan goes to Harry for tie help which gets a slightly snippy comment about being old. Harry is facing being older than Macy only for Jordan to inadvertently making it worse by reminding that Harry is immortal and Macy will eventually get older than him. The two compare insecurities with Harry with his age and Jordan with his education. The two tell the other to be themselves and to just be you. It's always nice to see touching moments between men that aren't focused on the conflict between them.

So far this season has been the strongest yet and has found the right blend of discovery, sisterhood, and witchcraft. The episode of the week format and their struggle to find meaning in life is what "Charmed" is all about and we're loving this season. We hope to keep seeing more episodes like the last couple.

Quotes:

"Why? Because I'm the oldest school you know?" - Harry

"You have experience with the ancient stuff." - Jordan "Why because I'm a relic?" - Jordan

"You do you." - repeated throughout the episode
