Weekly TV Reviews: Charmed s3 ep8
Macy has joined the Shea Group's Global Give Back campaign and has her all excited on the way up the elevator but the elevators then open again with a crying Macy being led out. Mel and Harry are doing a few magical attempts to figuring out answers to the tomb of chaos and their allergy. Maggie is using Jordan for a psych experiment to have the first word come to mind which nudges a can of worms between them that almost was.
1.) Mel & Harry
It's always interesting to see a variety of interactions by changing up the duos between characters. So we love seeing Mel and Harry teaming up to research the tablet and then stage a rescue when they find a witch in need of help. Kyra is the witch they rescued but the joy is short-lived when they learn she's been poisoned. One of the strengths a show can use is switching up partnerships to get different dynamics between characters such as seeing people who aren't usually together. Mel and Harry share a lot of scenes but don't have a lot of time just between them so it's nice to see them work together to save the witch's life. The sisters and Harry give Kyra a long lecture about her actions, then Mel and Harry get her to confront the conflict to put a stop to it.
2.) Macy
Macy's meeting with the board didn't go well and we so far haven't seen what really happened other than her reaction afterward. She was snippy with Maggie's request for a favor and we know Maggie will be trying to find out what happened. Macy is on edge and using every moment she can to snap at everyone around her, including her sisters and Harry. She also has every intention of confronting or vanquishing Harry. Maggie is using her word association project to try and get to why Macy is so mad which triggers a flashback to what happened. Macy is blindsided by a sudden photoshoot that she walks into, gets an attitude from the board woman when she doesn't want to wear the revealing dress, and at the end, we discover what happened at the board meeting. The end of the episode speaks volumes about racism and sexism through the treatment Macy received by showing the way women of color get treated.
The two sisters track down the "demon" only to discover it's no demon at all. It's a witch. It turns out to be a rivalry between two factions of the same coven fighting over sacred objects and using the Charmed Ones and Harry. This storyline has brought about the tension between Abby and Mel, which pokes a nerve with Abby being called 'irredeemable' while showing a new side to the witches. Their journey takes them to a new clue in their quest as they discover the same markings in the cave of ancients that this coven's ancestors had found. Alas, this brings them to find the other half of the stone tablet which with any luck will lead to a break of the allergy and some answers.
3.) Jordan
Jordan has to bail on Maggie to pick up papers only to learn that the one that summoned him was none other than ... Abby. She uses this to corner him and question him about the whereabouts of her sister who he never saw. She believes that she was cursed by her sister and she summoned him there to get to the origin of the curse. Thankfully, Jordan is rescued when Mel comes to confront her. Jordan is a great source of comic relief in the show but he's also a great source of advice and heart for the show. The confrontation between Mel and Abby is hysterical as Jordan hides behind the counter as glass is being thrown. The two have an interesting relationship but share a nice moment about redemption as Jordan shares about his own experience fighting his inner demons after he came back from war.
The episode ends with the table putting itself back together which we assume doesn't mean good things since someone broke it two for a reason. We're loving this season and feel it's the strongest one yet. It feels like the writers have found their voice after last season was spent trying to discover it and we applaud them.
Quotes:
"You almost burnt my fro! Not cool!" - Jordan to Abby (who was throwing fireballs at him)
"Your two sides are at war with your soul." - Jordan
