Weekly TV Reviews: Nancy Drew s2 ep10
Welcome back Drew Crew!
Check out our recap and review:
The episode opens with a dead bride with a veil over her face smash a window and take only a bouquet of flowers. The episode then cuts to the reporter we've previously seen interviewing Ryan sitting down with Nancy Drew. Ace and Bess offered article title help to an amusing degree: Hudson Rising anyone? The reporter gives her advice to not let anyone give her reason to judge her.... even by not putting a photo of her in a bikini online. In an unfortunate twist, she takes a straw from Nancy's drink .... which can only mean she plans to check her DNA against Ryan's.
1.) George
Odette inhabits George's body with a plan though doesn't enjoy Nick and Ace's plan to watch over her the entire time. Though, she has no problem with Bess accompanying her. Odette seems to have set eyes on Bess on a date with Ace playing chaperone. The two go ice skating with Odette having the time of her life while Bess can't even stand steady on her feet and in a romantic-like moment the ghost helps Bess out onto the ice. We've enjoyed every second of Odette and have no idea how this will play out. If they'll find a way to let Odette move on or if George and Odette will continue to share a body. George comes back to her body only to wake up on a bench with her head on Bess's shoulder and the two of them asleep and handcuffed on a police station bench. Odette and George have a blow-up with the latter announcing that if she can't be treated with respect then she won't be letting the ghost out again.
2.) Nancy On The Case
A string of strange robberies from a bouquet to two stolen rings. In an ironic twist, Nancy's new case leads her right back to the door of Gil who happened to be a witness. It's clear the show is carefully nudging the two characters together through their unexpected connection and the fact that the two are both lost souls. Now that we've gotten away from last season's plot, we're seeing more of the Bobbsey twins and we're loving it. One thing that the CW has done well is put unexpected twists on classic characters. We've seen it with superheroes, classic shows like Roswell, Walker, and Charmed, and literary characters such as Archie and the gang from the comics and our favorite sleuth. The wedding gown supposedly keeps carnal lust away and all the lust seems to go into the dress after the bride gets married.
The cop doesn't believe in ghosts but is humoring the notion by letting Nancy help with her expertise. Nancy is on the cop's case which leads her to discover he had a wedding registry but there wasn't a wedding when she noticed that he seemed tense around anything wedding or brides. They discover the last bride was murdered and theorize that the dress was influencing a living person who we see in a creepy horror moment. Nick has a welder hard at work only to turn his back for the welder to seal the door shut and shuck the mask/overalls to reveal a veil and a wedding gown. Normally we don't lean towards horror-influenced stories or genres such as zombies (with the exception of iZombie), ghosts, or murderous beings, or cannibals, but this blend of drama, ghosts, and sleuthing is well-done and had us addicted from the beginning of season one.
Nancy is a take action sleuth even if it means literally yanking a dress off a woman influenced by it.... and then breathing in a weird smoky substance that we're guessing is not going to go well for her. It's both humorous and shows a lot of her character to see her yanking the veil and dress off a woman then setting it on fire.... before it's less humorous with her seeming to become infected. Cue romantic music and slow walking as Nancy seem to zero her attention in on the handsome cop and becoming increasingly flustered... and rambling. This leads to a cue in romantic music and a slow walking Gil which leads Nancy to subtle take their hands in a flustered type of behavior. Thankfully George and Bess enter just in time to get Nancy away from the attractive men. The music plays once again when Nancy gets close to Nick or Ace which leads to one of the funniest moments ever with Ace's hair blowing in the wind and Nancy running her hands through his hair. Before she puts herself in the freezer. Enter the handsome detective and Gil to show up at the Claw to find Nancy while George tries to keep her from escaping. It may be the next funniest scene in the episode to see George physically wrestling/fighting with Nancy, yanking on her leg and trying to restrain her. Thankfully Nancy seems to hack up the lust ghost smoke she got off the wedding dress before doing anything she would regret with the handsome detective... who looks increasingly more confused by the second.
3.) Ryan
Ryan continues to be on his Hudson tour with Val sticking around to interview him (and sneakily steal DNA). He does take a moment to pop in to help Bess and Ace by giving them his family tree so they can help find a way to help Nancy who is trying to talk herself into thinking positive thoughts while sitting in the freezer. The reporter seems to be a genuine person but her snooping is going to end up causing a threat to Nancy if she uncovers the relation between her and Ryan. Unfortunately, he seems to be getting feelings for her only for the final scene to share her meeting in a car with Mrs. Hudson to make a deal and reveal to her that Nancy Drew is her granddaughter.
Elsewhere, Ace shares with Bess about the brother he's never meant that has spent his whole life in witness protection which unveils an affair his father had before he was even born. In exchange, Bess shares with Ace about feelings she had for Odette and why she got drunk to avoid having those feelings. He seems to get a chance to meet his brother only to find no one there and just a box with a photo of his dad waiting for him.
