Weekly TV Reviews: Nancy Drew s2 ep9
Bess is still reeling from being exiled from her family with one of the best openings ever with Bess crying on the couch and Ace having stayed over on the floor next to her. Nick gets to meet Odette officially who tells him to go away and has no patience for his presence though we can't help laughing at the ghost. This show has a way of blending emotional turmoil, ghosts, and humor with ease, taking a moment where they discovered the theft of the shroud only for Ace to share that a banana cream pie is missing. The theft leads the Drew Crew straight to the Bobbsey twins who they think is responsible for the disappearance of the shroud which brings Gil back into Nancy's orbit.
1.) Bobbsey Twins Are Back
Ace, Nancy, Nick, and George make their way back to Gil and Amanda's house where they learn that he stole the shroud to revive the man he thinks murdered his mother to get answers. This leads Nancy to make a deal with Gil that if she gets answers before six, he will give her back the shroud. This whole plotline much like last week feels very old school Nancy Drew. As avid readers of the books, it's exciting every time an episode leans toward these elements and less about the ghosts. The show balances the mystery, the drama, and the ghosts well, but there's an added bonus for episodes that are about the human mysteries versus the ghost ones.
2.) Amanda & Ace; Gil & Nancy
Nancy and Ace are getting to know the Bobbsey twins on a deeper level with the two listening which is seen through interchanging scenes about the disappearance of their mom who's believed to have been murdered. The team-up between Gil and Nancy is humorous as he has no patience and she's the queen of patience. She's serious and dedicated while he's reckless and unpredictable. Ace and Amanda split the search through Gil's stash spots with George and Nick, with the first couple going to a spot next to the police station and the second searching the cemetery. The first half of the episode was ghost light except for Odette's appearances so it's no surprise when the discovery of the paintings comes with a little ghostly eerieness like a figure in the back. Even more of a twist, who they thought was the killer has never painted a day in his life so the paintings of the Bobbsey mom weren't by him.
Find the Artist; Find the Killer
Ace and Nancy take a trip to a local gallery to find the artist of the paintings which leads them on the search for someone called Unknown. This leads to Nancy (with Nick's money) purchasing the painting which uncovers yet another painting of the Bobbsey mom only she's now fourteen years older and it is of how she would look today. So far this mystery has been one twist after another as she investigates a fourteen-year-old murder while trying to keep George from dying... again. Nancy figures it out just in time to move the body before Gil to revive the body and the twist turns out to be that their mother is alive. She was getting psychiatric help because she thought she was being haunted by a burning thing.
3.) Bess
Bess is a wreck since her exile from her family the night before and she's spending her day at home crying her eyes out. Carson shows up to get law books only for him to see Bess and being a dad, he chooses to work from the house and finds a way to help her by seeking her help with his opening statements. By getting her help, he gets her on her feet and gets her actively sharing her opinion which is a clear dad move. We love seeing Carson in dad mode and how he reaches out with love and support every second even when Nancy was mad at him.
The dramatic end finds Odette taking over George's body to take herself out to the cliffs so she can throw herself off the edge. It's adorable to see Bess sharing pieces of Carson's speech to her as a way to reach Odette. Thankfully, Nick and Bess are able to get through to her, and George's life is saved ... for the second time this episode. We enjoy seeing Odette and she's a great character that has a complex backstory but we also do want to see her get a peaceful pass into the afterlife.
