Weekly TV Reviews: Superman & Lois s1 ep2
The episode opens with our favorite super couple settling in with their sons on the Kent farm with Clark flying up to fix the roof while the Kent twins watching him. Their settling in doesn't come without some drama as Clark and Lois' suggestion for Jordan to stay home while he learns about his abilities doesn't go quite so well with him. "Captain Luther" is searching for Kryptonite to stop Clark with him stating straight out that he doesn't want Superman to do to this world what he did to Luther's world. The episode's plot of the week continues to focus on the threat of the mysterious armored man while Clark continues to deal with the disapproval of Lois's father who seems to tear down every decision they make. The episode is slowly pulling back reasons why Captain Luther is after Clark by showing a brief flash of his world at war with Superman (in black) as their enemy.
Thoughts:
1.) Two Sons' Journeys
Jonathan and Jordan have two separate journeys with one son trying to fit in at school and the other learning more about the origins of his abilities. Jonathan goes to school only to be bullied by the jocks while Jordan is taken to see the Fortress of Solitude (after going flying with his dad). A touching moment between Lois and Jonathan finds her telling him that she understands he left his identity and life behind to help his brother by coming to Smallville. The AI of Jor-El gives the news that Jordan "will never be like him" and has abilities that are limiting. Their separate journeys also cause them to clash against each other as Jordan is upset being "not special" and Jonathan blames his brother for why the football team is out to get him. What stands this show out is the amount of heart in the middle of the story with Jonathan promising that if no one else will help Jordan find out the truth about his abilities, he will.
2.) Lois On A Mission
One of the aspects of Lois that we've always liked in any adaptation is her strong will and independence. She's a woman that has a reporter's soul and doesn't let anyone keep her from figuring out the truth. She even goes to the town meeting about Morgan Edge to get information and perfect the art of butting into the town's business. One of the many reasons we've always enjoyed the character of Lois. The town meeting does come with an opportunity that we foresee will give Lois a way to be part of Smallville by joining the local paper. Her confrontation of Edge may prove to go against her as he uses her question as a way of considering not helping the town with jobs which could prove to add some drama to her life.
3.) Small Touches
The humor comes in small touches that are woven into the show and we're loving it. Such as Lois asking Morgan Edge about his intentions which pan to see both of her sons burying their faces with their hands. Clark and Lois have always been an epic couple from the comics and every adaptation of Superman eventually goes into their love story. "Superman & Lois" doesn't focus on the love story from how they meet, have drama, fall in love, more drama, and eventually work out. Instead, it focuses on them already settled and trying to balance out being partners, heroes, and parents.
Quotes:
"It's true what they say about you. You don't go to the news, the news goes to you." - Chrissy to Lois (at the town meeting)
