Weekly TV Reviews: Superman & Lois s1 ep3

The bond of family is where the heart of the story lies and it's also where the greatest complication for Clark is. One moment Clark and Lois are laughing and joking with their sons over painting the living room when a bridge begins to collapse and it's time for Superman to takeover. What comes up must come down as Clark seems to make headway with his sons, it comes crashing down once he must intervene before his sons end up in a fight that could expose them. The show takes a turn from the usual Superman adaptations with a family drama driving the storyline with his role as Superman more of a complication and almost an afterthought to his character. The fight of the week does not end well as Clark can't seem to fight off Lois' attacker until he reaches a place of anger which also adds some mystery that furthers the story of Edge as he's abnormally strong.

Thoughts:

1.) Growing Pains

Every move he makes toward his sons seems to only end in despair as he's trying to keep between his role as a dad and as Superman. He listens in on his sons to keep an eye on them out of worry but in doing so he's crossed a line with them. The relationship Clark has with his sons seems to be the main exploration that the show is aiming towards with him constantly butting heads with him. The boys and Sarah are teenagers that are trying to find their place and their parents are their main adversaries. Jordan tries out for football in an attempt to live a 'normal' life while keeping it a secret from Clark. Sarah's journey seems to coincide with theirs as her parents are hovering out of concern. The storylines have a clear reflection between them with the Cushings and the Kents just trying to be parents while their kids are teenagers that want separation for their own lives.

2.) Chasing Morgan Edge

Lois continues to dig into Morgan Edge with her new role as a reporter in Smallville with her editor as her new ally. She gets a visit from a mother who lost her son and only wishes to help them get Edge. She's driven to investigate the disappearance of the woman's son only to get an unfortunate warning when she finds her car on fire. Lois uncovers three other employees that she can't account for and this sends her on a mission in Clark's truck to get some answers. One of the things we love about her is the fierceness she carries with her everywhere she goes and that she doesn't let anyone intimidate her when she knows she's doing the right thing.

3.) Conflict Between Brothers

The brothers have moments that gravitate between their bond and their conflict. While they support each other, they're different people and those differences make them clash. Jonathan can see the potential danger in Jordan playing football while he doesn't see the harm in what he's doing. This pushes them to butt heads but the two of them do share a great deal of love between them. Though if we had to guess, Jordan is going to learn the hard way that every power comes with a great consequence that could end with someone being harmed. Seeing Jonathan go to Clark to defend Jordan playing football is a lovely moment that shows that despite the arguments and clashing, the brothers have a genuine love between them.
