Weekly TV Reviews: Nancy Drew s2 ep11
A case of memory...
Ominous opening this week with Nick waking up on the road by his truck in the middle of the night. It only gets stranger when he ends up getting a car to stop and gets them to take him to Nancy's house... only he doesn't seem to know how she is. The opening also shows Ryan confronted by his mother that Nancy is his daughter. He lies to his mother that he didn't know about Nancy but we hope it's only a ploy so he can go to Carson for help. The intriguing aspect about this memory is to figure out where Nick was at while Nick is trying to figure out who he is based on what they tell him. The episode straddles the line between suspense and humorous with them trying to solve a murder and stop a ghost while having no memories of who they are.
Meanwhile, Ryan goes to Carson and Nancy to save her. Her two dads are honestly terrified that Ryan's dad is going to kill her when he finds out about her. The heart of the show lies within the friendship dynamic with them as a group and seeing them band together to solve a case, relying on their connections.
1.) Murder of a Tour Guide
Nick has no memory and is now suspected of murdering a tour guide because his truck and phone were at the scene. Nancy and her friends are determined to keep Nick hidden while they solve the memory loss and murder before the cops catch up with him. They find an object within his truck that was taken from the Archives and has a few slash marks in his truck bed which are the same marks as what was found on the victims. The memory loss doesn't last long when he quickly regains his memories and immediately panics, telling them to leave because it was coming to get him now that he remembers. We sense a ghost approaching and sure enough, as soon as he's alone a demonic entity attacks him. Nick quickly uses the device to once again remove his memories and the ghost vanishes, leaving him calling for help. Nancy brings Nick to Carson for an interview with Ace's dad which leads to him being told about the accident that occurred years ago. We see the Drew Crew then discovering the god's name only for them all to forget who they are with a jump cut so we don't see what happened in between.
We love that they left themselves clues after their fifth failed attempt where they learn that they keep trying it over and over. This leads to a humorous montage of reading their biographies, looking at photos and videos, and a series of failed attempts where they keep waking up with no memories. This goes all the way up to attempt seventeen where they wake up again with no clue who they are and using their clues to figure out how to stop the evil entity. Still no luck at stopping the entity and once again they return to the Claw where they watch a video to learn they failed many many times. A video on the laptop tells them that they have taken the very last dose so their only choice is to not regain their memories. We have a good feeling they'll solve the problem by the end and get to put their memories back. Odette makes an appearance to put in her opinion. Leave to a memoryless Drew Crew to think of a plan to stop a creature that kills who knows its name by telling everyone. One good thing about this plan is we see a flashback to how Nick first learned of the god's name and how he ended up learning its name. Once they stop the entity, only one question remains, how do they prove that Nick isn't a killer?
2.) Nancy and her Two Dads
One of the things that we have loved is the evolution of Ryan and Carson going from bickering and butting heads to being on the same side. They go to Nancy with their fear which leads her to make a drastic choice and erasing her grandmother's memories. While it shouldn't be funny, we couldn't help but finding it humorous to watch her walk into the Claw thinking it was such a cute restaurant. The lack of memory at least gives Nancy and her grandmother a sweet moment where they dance together before the time where their memories come back.
Nancy then comes clean to Carson about using a supernatural device to take away her grandmother's memories. Carson still doesn't know the full story of all the supernatural and ghosty things that Nancy and her friends are going through, but we like that even with bits and pieces, he just jumps on board. In a sweet moment, she asks him to come back home. The episode ends with Nancy seeming to put her own plan into place by asking her grandmother for help getting the Hudson patriarch to trust her. We're curious to see if her plan will coincide with Ryan and Nick's.
One of the things we adore about this show is the relationship between George and Nick. The show began with the usual dynamic of Nancy and Ned Nickerson but the best thing was seeing Nick get together with George. The way they build each other up is an amazing thing and is what first made us fall in love with them as a couple. We love seeing them take Carson's loft and can't wait to see more of them together.
The episode ends with a cliffhanger that sets up next week's episode when Ace finally meets his brother - Grant - and is asked for his help.
