Weekly TV Reviews: Nancy Drew s2 ep11
We discovered at the end of the last episode that their new cook at the Claw is actually Ace's half-brother.
Ace has finally discovered the identity of his brother and the mystery only delves further from there when Grant's mother is in trouble. Now, to save his mother's life, he turns to Ace and Nancy for helping to find a mysterious object. Elsewhere, Nick is still on the trail of taking down the Hudsons while he and George are getting cozy in their new home.
1.) Helping a Brother Out
Ace and Grant are on a new level, going from co-workers to brothers struggling to find a connection even if they don't have the same tastes in bands. The two of them are still figuring out how to interact on this new level and this leads to a slightly awkward moment when Grant meets their dad for the first time. Ace is determined to find a connection with little exercises like Star Trek or Star Wars to see what interests they share. Sounds of crumbling in a mine never lead to good things. Neither does dust so it's not a surprise when they face a sudden collapse. The character of Nancy continues to be a brilliant adaptation of the character with her quick thinking about how to brace the beams so they can crawl through. It seems that their dad is going to have a part to play when they need a code that he's the only clue they have to get it right.
Ace gets the clue from his dad which provides a list of witnesses that a murderer is after and this only gets more complicated when the killer arrives face to face with him. This leads to Nancy getting a call from the killer and now they have a decision to make that's more than just saving Grant's mom. The Road Back is an ominous new threat introduced that feels like it'll be a threat down the line. This moment even finds Nancy placed in a position between the lives of the witnesses and the life of Ace. The relationship between the brothers is quickly put to an end when Grant receives word that they're being relocated in witness protection which feels like an unfortunate end to a great possibility. However, this does end with Grant getting to meet his dad as his son which is a heartwarming moment and we only wish we could see more of them. The moment is translated by Ace and this only adds to the emotional depth of the scene and we can't help loving every second of it. We can't help but wish Grant would stick around for more episodes.
2.) Sisters in the Kitchen
George is determined to win the Chowder Bowl even though her younger sister is dead set against the barbaric act of cooking the clams alive. While the sisters aren't a part of the main story this week, we love any time they show George with her sisters. These moments are woven into the show and give George a sweet fierceness about her that is glowing with love and protectiveness whenever she's with her sisters. It's a funny moment when she discovers that her sisters have not only met Odette but have spent time with her. She even helps one with her French homework. It's a humorous moment but it's one that shows how Odette has found a place within the story and with the characters as her own being even if she's only a part-time-ish being within George's body.
3.) Finding Proof
Nick is meeting with a mole and George is readying for a chowder bowl. One of the biggest evolutions we've had in characters has been Nick. He's taken the troubles from his past along with his own trauma and turned it into a strength in his present. He's used the money he inherited to buy the Claw and completely change his life. It's only been about a season and a half, but Nick has shown significant growth in his character and we love seeing him in this new element of happily in love, business owner, community member, and investigator against the Hudson family. Each of the characters has grown since we first met them in the pilot, and it's further proof that what Nancy Drew does the best is character evolution. He finally gets information from the mole at the end and discovers that Ryan's father has been setting him up this whole time by using his name to pay off murderers and the works.
Nancy Drew and her grandmother are still striving for a connection ... and a power play. She's still determined to keep the truth about the Hudson family's patriarch and it puts her into a sticky situation. Ace and Grant's mom are on the line which pushes Nancy into turning to her grandmother for help to get the list back after the killer took it. It was a desperate moment for Nancy to save her friend when he asks her if she believed her grandmother and her response was that she couldn't lose him. The friendship between them has gone through some strain since the pilot but they have a genuine quality between them that is a little different than the other dynamics. Nancy's crossroads and her ploy against the Hudson's finally comes into play when she makes the decision to retract her statement with the DA.
4.) Bess & Odette
Bess and the French ghost have an unusual spark between them that has been seen over the last few episodes. They have a certain connection between them that seems to be steadily growing and has taken a turn with Odette leaving Bess a letter in a similar fashion to the letters she left for her English love. George discovers the letter and tells Bess that whatever void she's trying to fill needs to end. This may not be a dynamic that gets explored in too much depth but it's a surprising one that adds a certain vulnerability to Odette and to Bess.
