Book Reviews: A Hex for Danger by Esme Addison

Bellamy Bay is the place to be. The details that Addison uses for the town are woven with magic and secrets that draw you into this world within a world. The town has a supernatural heritage that most don't know about and Alex has found herself in the middle of it all. She has her family that's tied to strong traditions and opinions that have created a support system and a learning curve for her as she finds a new place for herself. The story is strongly rooted in family and traditions which delivers heartfelt moments into Alex's life as she's found everything she had been searching for in book one. The story delivers a complex plot that balances between the murder mystery and the supernatural problems. The supernatural is often found at the heart of the murder and part of what draws Alex into the investigation. Their secrets are threatened when a reporter starts sniffing around and this throws the right amount of chaos into the mix.

Addison weaves in magical touches that bring the mystery to life and make you want to keep coming back to see what will happen next. Alex has settled into town and has found her place with her family. She's finally adjusted to the shocking revelations from book one but that doesn't make her life any less complicated. Romance has a part to play within the story as she's started a potential relationship with the handsome detective and still has a draw to the resident bad boy. Both connections come with complications for her as one is a normal human that doesn't know anything about the supernatural world and the other is surrounded by darkness and secrets. The world is unique in that it balances a cozy theme with a fresh take on mermaid lore (and more) that's original. Addison has captured magic in a whole new way that blends it with the cozy mystery genre for something that feels new.

A great follow-up to the first book, A Hex for Danger is clever, witty, funny, magical, and addicting.
