Weekly TV Reviews: Batwoman s2 ep12
The fight against Black Mask continues. The first few minutes also give us another look at Kate Kane who faces have been destroyed by her accident and her memories are being manipulated by the evil therapist. Elsewhere, Alice wakes up in bed with Ocean and then on her way out is confronted by a game of masked men searching for him.
In the last episode, Sophie figured out that Ryan is the new Batwoman and now we're seeing her facing that truth. The new guy, Russell, has a DNA sample for Batwoman with Jacob having signed off on him using resources to track her down. Jacob is struggling with his addiction which has altered him just enough that Sophie has noticed slight differences but not enough to learn about his current problem. We suspect it won't be much longer with the way his temper keeps flaring up and lashing out at her. After this confrontation, Sophie turns away from the Crows and tells Batwoman about the DNA search.
An immediate bright spot in the episode is that Mary is back this week which is always a pleasure. Though we're used to people missing episodes, it's still sad when some of our favorites miss an episode. Mary has been a favorite since the beginning and brings a brightness to the show that is always appreciated.
1.) Alice and Batwoman Partners
Alice is found by Batwoman torturing the Masked Minions as she searches for Ocean. In her desperation to find Angelique, Ryan and Alice agree to team up. We never knew that Alice in the Batmobile was something we needed in our lives until we saw it, but we're so happy to have it. Alice pushing buttons and trying to talk relationships with Ryan is somehow adorable, even for her insane brain. Their team-up is unexpected as they're two entirely different people, and not just with their sanity levels. The duo is strange in the way they communicate which is half snippy comments and half heart-to-heart moments. The two of them have a weird almost friend dynamic even though the hate between them (at least on Ryan's part) is real. Every dynamic with Alice is a weird one but this is definitely one of the stranger relationships. The fight to rescue Ocean and Angelique comes with a twist. Alice gets the first look at the new Kate (who doesn't know she's Kate) and sends her after Batwoman. Ryan stages a rescue but Ocean has already been shot before she's able to break them free. Batwoman and Alice fight against the new Kate which leads to Ryan walking out to let Alice be killed (even after Alice revealed that she remembered Ryan's mom after all). Angelique returns at Ryan's door and with an epiphany about her own mistakes. This also comes with a request to join her in witness protection and that she made a deal with the FBI.
2.) Sophie
Sophie has seemingly chosen to keep Ryan's secret as she's attempted to help steal the DNA sample that would prove who Batwoman is. Mary pays Sophie a visit with a gift from Luke and she attempts to shrug off her visit by just doing Luke a favor. Their current plan is to scramble the DNA sample so they won't be able to read the results with Mary playing distraction to get Jacob out of his office. She runs into a huge problem when she goes with Plan B. If she corrupts the file for Batwoman, she corrupts the files of all open cases so then it would protect a bunch of criminals. Mary's Plan C works with flying colors when she goes in and deletes Ryan's records so there won't be a match in the system. She returns to cover up her footsteps which leads her to the exact thing she needed to find in Jacob's office - Snakebite. It's a relief to see that Sophie is figuring everything out and not just about Batwoman. Alice wakes up at the end tied to a chair and with Black Mask confronting her which leads to him deciding to keep her for something of interest.
Part of Mary's distraction plan involved bringing Jacob into the clinic to look around at what she's doing but his addiction has him quick out the door. The episode ends with Sophie showing up at the clinic to tell Mary about what she discovered. She shrugs up the idea that her dad is doing drugs but Sophie pushes forward to get her to talk to him.
