Weekly TV Reviews: Charmed s3 ep10
The last episode ended with scorpions descending from the sky and around the house. This episode opens with Macy in a panic as she makes her way into an alleyway where she saves some loudmouth on a phone that was about to get eaten by a demon. Harry hasn't had any success at putting the tablet back together but he has managed to predict where the rifts will open and the extinct demons will come through.
1.) Real-Life versus Charmed Duties
The sisters are on full-time duty chasing after extinct creatures that their real-lives are falling behind. Maggie is exhausted and trying to balance hunting demons with studying for a psych paper so she can get an internship. Macy and Harry are struggling with their lives consumed by this hunt and the allergy keeping them from having a real relationship. Harry can't even heal her without hurting her which only adds to the stress between them. While the Charmed ones are busy chasing after rifts, they have no idea that a demon managed to steak its way in via Macy's clothes. The dropping goo turns into a tiny worm-looking monster with Harry unknowingly going about his business between the tablet work and the rifts opening closer together.
Mel takes the next rift opening and finds a disturbing-looking faceless monster that she barely manages to blow up only for two balls of light to descend before her as a couple that makes a loud almost hypnotic sound. Mel opens a portal only for it to not close behind her. The couple manages to follow through. Harry is then knocked out by the man while Mel uses Josefina's knot to attempt to restrain the couple. While Harry is unconscious and Mel deals with the silent couple, Macy is facing a problem of her own with an infection from her shoulder wound which causes her to pass out before Mel calls. The most shocking part is when Harry snaps awake only to grab Mel by the arm without shocking her and realizes that his powers are now gone.
Maggie is still in the forest where she gets into a sword fight with a demon that shares her face. The individual storylines have heightened the ending of the last episode which foretold the chaos the Charmed Ones would be facing. This form of storytelling heightens the chaos feeling and each scene is quick and action-packed which keeps you on the edge of your seat. This episode captures perfectly the meaning of chaos. This leads to a surprising conclusion that this silent couple made Harry mortal. We're not sure what this means for him long term. We're excited to see Harry going to help Macy and to see her realize he is no longer magical. Mel goes to help Maggie while Josefina stays behind to guard the silent couple while we see that the worm thing has gotten bigger. Harry finds Macy on the floor but he's not able to heal her so this leads him to think outside of the box to help her while Mel searches for Maggie.
We have a feeling this fear creature after Maggie has a larger purpose with the saying that it'll all be over soon. Mel immediately figures out that the creature is a Doppelganger that feeds on fear, but with both sisters, they have no problem fighting the creature off. While Mel and Maggie have a heart-to-heart and return, the now happy couple make their way back to find everyone at Safe Space unconscious, including Josefina. When Josefina wakes, she has the startling revelation that if they kill the silent couple then the entire world is screwed. Their cousin claims that the couple isn't there to hurt them which seems to be proven true when they use their powers to keep the worm from attacking Maggie. After touching everyone in Safe Space, the couple starts talking and they immediately reveal that they're the ones that created the tomb of chaos. Then they put Harry's powers back which makes him unable to touch Macy again. The Charmed Ones finally learn how the Tomb of Chaos was created and hopefully, this will give them a way of fixing the allergy while putting the creatures back. Though the two newbies may claim to be there to help, we're not entirely sold on their motives.
Maggie takes a step forward for her own mental health and makes an appointment with a therapist. Harry has his powers back when he pops into the kitchen with flowers and flour where Macy shares a fear that there will be a world without him in it. This allows Harry to share his own fears about living in a world without her in it.
2.) Family Duties
Mel is getting some bonding time with her cousin who has stayed in town since the slight chaos she caused with her arrival. Josefina has a powerful arc trying to prove herself against the traditions of her family and those that think only "biological women" can have powers. Mel doesn't think her cousin is ready to take on demon battles while Josefina only wants to be part of something, even this fight. We're excited for her to get more screen time and to see how she grows as a character. We're here for her to prove herself and excited to see what power she gets. We have no doubt she'll be able to find that power within herself. She sees the silent couple as a chance for her to see about getting her powers with the idea that if they can strip magic then maybe they can give it. She appeals to the silent couple for help getting her powers so she can help her cousins but all they do is look at her with blank expressions. They're eerily silent and expressionless for beings so powerful. Though we wonder if their voices, like sirens, are some way of communication. Josefina is onto the right idea with trying to communicate via musical noises to the silent couple which is humorous to see as she tries to hum notes to them. Their musical notes seem to make the tablet glow and we hope that Josefina is right that they're not there to hurt anyone. Josefina reveals that the couple showed her that they couldn't bestow magic, only power it, which leads to a sweet moment between her and Mel.
The chaos in the episode was nicely done and the tone matched perfectly. The end of the episode foreshadows "side effects" that the silent couple won't know "until they know" what those could be. But the sisters are determined to end the allergy whatever it takes.
