Weekly TV Reviews: Legends of Tomorrow s6 ep1
The Legends are back ... and this time they're taking on aliens.
In a great opening, Mick returns to the Waverider to find the place trashed, but this doesn't keep him from going about his morning with poached eggs. Then finds Ava in the bathroom, hungover and realizing that no one tucked her into bed. Only she and Mick are on board. It doesn't take long to find Constantine and Zari in a hotel with their "no-strings-attached hook-up," Astra's playing poker, Behrad is talking to the guard's outside Buckingham Palace, and Nate is talking about his relationship with the other Zari with Bowie. Still, no sign is seen of Sara.
1.) Looking for Sara
They quickly learn Sara was "sucked up in a spaceship" from Bowie who just happened to catch it on video. And that video gives away one of the biggest shockers of the season ALREADY. Sara reveals that she was going to propose to her girlfriend and even shows the ring to the camera right before the video shows her being sucked up into a spaceship. One of the best parts is the list that Ava checks off while acting casual about the decisions they all make. It's one of the best visual and is a classic example of what makes Legends so funny. Constantine attempts a spell to track down Sara which fails and leads him to down a bottle of whiskey. He decides quickly that this is out of his league while Ava and Nate fail to get hold of the DEO (which fans of Supergirl and the crossovers know was destroyed).
Ava's first plan fails, but Behrad (who happens to be high) gets a tabloid that happens to tell a story about a girl that claims to talk to aliens. He and Mick team up to go search down the supposed alien communicator who happens to also be harboring a knife. Meanwhile, Zari and Astra come up with a plan. It's too bad that the book Constantine needs is missing and in Gary's room... where they find a disturbing dripping cocoon.... and leads to the second SHOCK of the episode. GARY IS ONE OF THE ALIENS THAT HAS SARA. We knew that Gary's backstory would be addressed. We didn't expect it to be addressed THIS quick, or that our theory that he was an alien would actually be right. We assumed when he was upped to series regular, he would be on the Waverider with the Legends, not on the alien spaceship with Sara. Even with the theory he MIGHT be an alien still left us in total shock. Though, this does explain why Gary is a little odd in his behavior.
Zari demonstrates with Gary's glasses that he's been using them to transform into a human. This is a shock to them all that Gary kidnapped Sara. Meanwhile, Behrad and Mick are tied to tables while Spooner is acting like one crazy woman with a knife. Spooner is not messing around as she shoots through the Waverider and nearly hits one of the Legends. With a little heart-to-heart, Ava begs Spooner for help in their search for Sara which backfires quickly. The poor woman then wakes up on the Waverider while they try again to talk her into helping. Their next plan is to have Spooner contact Gary so that they can reach Sara's whereabouts and all she needs is to drink a gross potion. Ava goes with Plan B by stepping into the circle when Constantine can't and finds her long enough to send her a message. The bright side is that Ava made it clear that her answer is yes.
The connection between Constantine and Zari is already being hit upon and while on the surface they're saying it's a fling, we predict this won't last long. Astra is determined to see what it's like to be normal and this means not living on the Waverider where she can be roped into various missions. Spooner seems to have the ability to hear aliens and this comes just as the Legends watched the aliens being thrown into the timeline. And the third shocking thing was that Gary was apparently engaged to his boss though he assumes the wedding's off now. The episode ended with Gary and Sara failing to make it through the wormhole.
2.) Sara on Board a Spaceship
This season is expected to see Sara on a solo storyline with her alien abduction which kicks off immediately after they discover she's missing. She finds herself trapped within a cramped closet and then the view out the window tells her that she's in space. We were instantly curious about the ship that Sara is on which just happens to also have Spartacus frozen on board. A newly thawed Spartacus quickly takes a look at the ship and decides that together they will liberate their fellow prisoners, therefore, leading to a rebellion. Though, the next creature thawed out is a disturbing-looking alien. We never thought that seeing Sara putting Spartacus in his place was something we needed on our to-do list, but we do not regret this decision. We get the first look at the aliens and they're a disturbing look of teeth and squid-like. Spartacus doesn't last long but does give us a look at just what the creatures are capable of... in a disturbing way. One grows out a tentacle, stabs Spartacus through the torso, then opens a Venus Flytrap mouth up, and eats the warrior whole.
Gary makes it quickly clear that his job was to abduct Sara because she's an important human. He promises that he doesn't eat humans ... anymore. And says, that he's the one that saved her by rigging the pod to open to her handprint. In true Gary fashion, he misunderstands her request for him to tell her all she knows about this ship and thinks she meant her and Ava. On the bright side, it would appear that Gary truly does love and care about all of them. The two come up with a plan to take control of the ship and get rid of his boss, but it's not that easy to do. The distraction does the job by giving Gary the chance to send them through a wormhole. Sara manages to use Ava's ring to break her way free and go for round two against Gary's boss, just before sending her into space through an open door. The process of doing so also sends all the pods through the wormhole which we're guessing will cause a slight alien throughout time problem.
