Weekly TV Reviews: Legends of Tomorrow s6 ep3
Last week we went to the 1950s. This week we're taking at rip into the future with a robotic-looking alien searching for the ruler. Zari and Constantine are still having their no-strings-attached relationship which seems to be heading in one of two directions: a breakup or a real relationship. They're interrupted by Behrad who comes with her emergency phone which came with a message from her cousin that her ex was killed. Things can only get crazier from here.
1.) Into the Future
This episode will be as entertaining as the others as this alien decides to kill the DJ ex of Zari's because it thought he was the ruler. This sends the Legends to Hollywood to track the alien down and learn that the Rock is the current president. Zari is back in her element as a celebrity and the transformation is humorous while also providing enough distraction to let them into the talent competition judged by the DJ. Only Legends of Tomorrow can pull off a fight to techno music on a competition show. Behrad and Nate attempt to fight the alien which is a sequence that apparently catches the attention of the DJ and the fans. Ava cleverly gets the alien to enter the Waverider and traps it. On the bright side, they can actually talk to this one. The downside, the alien has no idea about Sara and only woke up when it landed there. Nate, Behrad, and Ava convince the alien to not do a death duel but to compete via song and dance. Spooner has seen up close how the Legends work which is humorous.
Zari is dealing with her business while Constantine is following her around and getting insight into the world of Zari. Constantine also gets to meet her ex and pretend to be her "boyfriend" while also setting his marshmallow head on fire. She announces to her Z Nation that she's the wild card in the competition. It's always so much fun to see her in this element and to remember that she's this powerhouse celebrity that runs her own brand and business. This show always has a way of topping their insanity and Da Throne is right at the top of it all. Though Zari and Constantine claim to be casual, and he does whatever he can to keep people at a distance, he also falls easily. It would seem that he's getting a little smitten. This is one of the rare shows that's unpredictable with where they'll go so there's no guess just yet where these two will go. To win the competition, Nate and Behrad come up with the idea to use a love story to help her chances which leads to them making him look like a rocker.
Zari gets a visit from her mother who isn't pleased her daughter didn't tell her that she was competing and dating that "magic man." This leads to a sad moment when Constantine overhears her tells her mother that they won't last because it was just a fling. Zari plays the part with ease with lie after lie about their meet-cute to royalty ties which don't sit well with him and make him leave. This leads to an argument between the two of them and him actually walking out in anger. Mick has fallen off the rails since Sara's been gone and has gone straight into drinking which leads him to trigger the alien to contact its people for an invasion. Her ex goes behind her back to give Nox the song that Zari was going to sing so Behrad knocks him out and Nate goes in disguise as the DJ. Constantine makes a not-so-shocking declaration when he tells Zari that he wants them to be real even if he knows he'll mess it up. In a sweet moment that only Legends can do, Zari sings while Constantine accompanies her with a guitar. Thankfully Zari won the sing-off and saved the planet with Nox declaring her the queen. It seems as if for now the two of them are going to be together. This may be the cutest alien on the show so far with a teeny one inside of the suit and was the cutest thing ever ... until Mick smashes it with his foot. Mick does step up (no pun intended) and gets a lead on Kayla to find Sara (which we all know is Gary's former boss/fiance).
2.) Gary the Not-So Brave
Gary isn't thrilled at the idea of Sara not being able to fight and it is on him. She encourages him to use his alien-ness to fight back. Even though we've seen the power these aliens have, it's still nice to see him exactly the same as he's been the entire time. Gary (as his alien self) waits in the trees for the people will light to emerge as Sara waits in the shadows. Gary is such an upbeat, nerdy, timid character so seeing him actually using his full abilities is a little terrifying because he can actually be dangerous. This is a truly rare moment that shows Gary as something other than the sweet nerd we love and shows that he works to be non-violent. In a shocking turn, the people he just ate are revealed to be Ava clones which causes much distress to poor Gary. Sara is suffering from the poison side effects which leads her to follow Ava (a clone) to a mysterious door though she's not fooled one bit by the impersonation. The end of the episode ends with a look at the bad guy for the season though we don't get to know what he wants until next week.
