Weekly TV Reviews: Legends of Tomorrow s6 ep2
The Legends are back! Last week, we picked up with Sara being abducted by aliens and Ava rallying the team to get her girlfriend back. We also had two shocking discoveries in the first episode of the season. Sara planned to propose to Ava just before getting taken which leads to Ava telling her yes in a brief message. After fans got their excitement out about the engagement, they were in shock over the reveal that Gary is an alien! The entire time we've gotten to know him, he's been an alien in disguise. Gary was sent to Earth to abduct Sara but ended up falling in love with humans and couldn't go through it. His boss (and former fiancee) had other plans. Gary chose to defy his boss and help Sara attempt an escape through a black hole. The plan failed which led to the duo crashing on a strange planet and a hoard of aliens being sent throughout the timeline for the Legends to track down with a new character named Spooner.
The episode opens with an alien smashing on the windshield of the Waverider, picking up moments where the pilot left off. This brings the Legends back to 1955 California and is a place called the birth place of fast food. They discover that the entire population was killed overnight.
1.) The Legends Back in Time
The Legends and Spooner don 1950s style with even Constantine dressing the part under his trench coat. While the team eats burgers and fries which serves as the time that Zari chooses to tell Behrad that she wants to share the totem. This scene also gives a great moment where Ava and Constantine (with Southern accents) attempt to get information from two cops. Spooner gets a headache telling her that an alien is near and then she mistakenly steals the glasses off a waitress. While Mick, Spooner, Constantine, and Ava go check out disturbance calls, Behrad, Nate, and Zari get jobs at the burger shop to keep an eye on the place. The latter trio has a mixed set of emotions when it comes to their new burger jobs with Zari less than thrilled, and the two guys overly eager.
Mick, Ava, Constantine, and Spooner check out the butcher shop for any signs of aliens. So far, this alien storyline has been a blast and we're only on the second episode. The writers are clearly taking from alien horror tropes to create exciting new chaos for the Legends to discover. Behrad is getting back into his old burger-flipping ways while Nate takes to rollerblades as a waiter. The siblings bicker over the totem while the other half of the team get the meat crazed man checked by Gideon. In a moment that challenges the pea soup moment, the guy throws up thanks to magic from Constantine. The moment is a little disturbing and gooey as pink gunk shoots straight up to the ceiling. While the other three are making burgers, they learn that the secret sauce is the alien and they've just served everyone a burger. The trio tries to steal the secret sauce when they're attacked and learns that the owner's wife is the one that makes the sauce. Spooner pushes Ava too far and nearly makes her snap, but it's so much fun to watch Ava putting on a Southern housewife persona to get information from the wife. Despite being super perky, the wife only dishes that her secret ingredient is rice vinegar though as she walks away she's hit on the forehead by pink goo. Outside Spooner and Constantine spot a box in the garage just as Ava follows the goo into the attic. Legends is the only show where you can write goo with a serious face during a review, and this is one among many reasons why we love it.
The alien horror tropes are a delightful twist for the show yet comes so naturally. Even a housewife is obsessively protecting a giant gooey pink alien egg. Ava wakes up tied to a chair while the housewife is seemingly brushing goo off the egg and has been knowingly serving it to their customers. Zari and Behrad have a sweet sibling moment as they have a moment of teamwork to lace the burgers with her sleepy time minerals. The alien hatches into a disturbing moth-like creature that eats the housewife and flies away while the other trio is serving burgers up to the angry hoard in a rather jaunty montage. As the team rejoins to figure out how to get the moth alien down, the owner is swept away by it. The bright side is that Spooner uses one of her special guns to shoot it down. On the downside, they lost their chance to talk to it. Though, it doesn't seem like it would have been very chatty. The episode ends with Spooner and Ava having a heart-to-heart with the former opening up about her abduction as a little girl and the loss of her mother. Ava offers Spooner a place on the ship and a place to call her own which is the same opportunity that each of the Legends has received. Behrad offers the totem to Zari but she turns it down and the two end up arguing about it while OG Zari listens in. She makes a totem appear on each of their wrists.
2.) Sara & Gary's Excellent Adventure
The duo picks up moments after the ship crashes on an unknown planet. Gary reveals that they were hired to gather the universe's most dangerous aliens. The first thing the duo sees is a dog. The dog is a perfectly normal dog with a cute scarf which tells Sara that they can breathe the air. Gary reveals more about his background as an alien with the disturbing information that on his planet they ate their own and that he wasn't so much engaged as traded to his ex. Gary is still his chatty self as they walk through the strange land which only gets stranger when they meet Amelia Earhart. The duo chats with Amelia and gets a few tidbits about the planet which takes a bit of a strange turn when she doesn't want them to leave before eating.
The Legends are facing an alien horror show while Sara and Gary are on a science fiction adventure on a whole other planet. It's like watching two shows with matching themes and Legends is pulling it off with flying colors. This show is one of the rare ones that has the capability to make the strange seem perfectly normal. The duo shares dinner with Amelia who to us is a little shady and answers every question with the same thing as if on a loop. In a disturbing twist, Amelia attacks Sara and opens her mouth in an alien-like manner only for Gary to step in by knocking the woman out. Just as Sara agrees that a winter wedding would be beautiful (after assuring that he would not be planning her wedding), a bunch of lights appears... and the episode ends.
